Once a tree has been felled the stump remains in the ground. Most of the time this isn’t a problem as the stump will naturally rot and decay, returning to nature and providing a perfect habitat for woodland creatures and fungi in the process.

Do You Have A Tree Stump We Can Help With?
There are certain situations where the removal of the stump is called for, for example:
- The stump is on a site which is to be redeveloped
- The tree has been removed for a purpose, i.e. to make way for a house extension
- Leaving the tree stump in situ would pose a hazard to humans and/or animals
The most common and effective way to remove an unwanted tree stump, and the method which we use here at Scott Davies Tree Surgery, is to grind it away. We do this using a specialist stump grinder, which incorporates a large spinning disc and cutting teeth. We grind the stump down to around 25cm below the surface, leaving plenty of depth to lay concrete or turf over.
The machines we use to grind stumps is fairly compact so we can get it into tight spaces and can position it close to walls, fences, and other obstacles in order to remove as much of the stump as possible. Removing the roots of a tree is often very disruptive as they cover a large area underground, but this is usually unnecessary because the removal of the stump causes the root system to die away.
What to consider before stump grinding
Before opting for stump grinding services, there are a few factors to consider.
- Assess the location and accessibility of the stump to ensure the equipment can reach it. Consider any potential underground utilities that may hinder the process.
- Take note of any nearby structures, such as walls or fences, to determine the level of precision required during grinding.
- To ensure a safe and effective removal of the stump consult with Scott Davies professionals experienced in stump grinding service.

Stump Grinding FAQ’s
Stump grinding is a process that involves using specialised equipment to mechanically grind the stump into small wood chips. Unlike other removal methods, such as manual extraction or chemical treatments, stump grinding is efficient, environmentally friendly, and leaves the area ready for replanting or construction.
The duration of stump grinding depends on various factors, including the size and type of the stump, accessibility, and the equipment used. Generally, smaller stumps can be ground away in a matter of minutes, while larger or more complex stumps may take several hours. Our experienced professionals can provide a more accurate time estimate after assessing your specific situation.
Proper stump grinding performed by skilled technicians should not cause any significant damage to the surrounding landscape or property. Our equipment is designed to minimise any impact on the surrounding area. However, it’s essential to communicate any specific concerns or delicate features near the stump to our team, so appropriate precautions can be taken during the grinding process.
After grinding the stump, the leftover wood chips can be repurposed in various ways. They can be used as mulch for garden beds, pathways, or flower beds to enhance soil moisture retention and weed control. Alternatively, you may choose to have the wood chips removed from the site entirely. Our stump grinding service provides options for handling the wood chips based on your preferences.
